Ceramides and their benefits for the skin

What are they?

A fatty substance essential to healthy skin, ceramides are naturally present in all layers of the skin and make up 50% of the skin’s composition. In their natural state in the body, they ensure good cohesion between skin cells and form a kind of intercellular cement. The structures of ceramides are heterogeneous and complex and they are also known as: ceramide 1, ceramide 2, ceramide 3, ceramide EOS… Necessary to ensure the integrity of the epidermis, they are also present in the hair bulb and allow, among other things, good nutrition and good protection of the hair.

Where to find them?

Ceramides can be of plant origin (derived from sunflower or jojoba oil) or synthetic. Due to their properties and safety, ceramides and their active ingredients can be integrated into all skincare routines, especially when it comes to dry skin, atopic dermatitis and/or sagging skin and even excess sebum. They are integrated into many cosmetic formulations for the skin such as:

  • Moisturizing day and night creams
  • After-sun care
  • Serums and anti-aging care
  • Body milks and balms

Organized in dense and structured lamellae, these complex lipids are a valuable ally and will act on several levels. Protective, regenerating and lipid-replenishing, ceramides have the essential characteristics for waterproof, young and radiant skin. Although naturally present in the body, with time and damage linked to the sun or pollution, the percentage of ceramides decreases drastically. Subsequently, the skin produces much less and becomes more permeable and more vulnerable.

To combat this programmed degeneration, rely on care enriched with ceramides, especially with age and in the case of dry skin, to boost cellular regeneration and obtain an optimal ceramide level. Indeed, here are some benefits (and not the least) that are attributed to ceramides:

Anti-acne action

Yes, even oily skin needs lipids. Indeed, several studies have shown that the lower the ceramide level, the higher the proportion of sebum and blackheads. A link that is also based on the fact that acne-prone skin is more sensitive to dehydration and requires a balanced lipid intake. Between the right dosage and targeted application, we therefore do not ignore this ingredient, even in the case of skin inflammation.

A strong moisturizing power

If you have dry, tight skin, or suffer from eczema or irritation, ceramides are definitely your allies.

Indeed, they can create a protective film on the surface of the skin, thus blocking aggressions and preventing the evaporation of water and therefore dehydration. An essential active ingredient to relieve skin damaged by the cold, the sun or chronic irritations. Face and body formulas enriched with ceramides help repair and restore the skin barrier, which allows for better long-term skin hydration.

Proof of their effectiveness? Immediately after applying ceramide-enriched skincare, the skin is more supple, softer and more radiant. Furthermore, in the long term, the skin’s natural barrier will be strengthened and will be less prone to itching and irritation.

Anti-aging properties

Yet another advantage of ceramides, their cellular regenerative power. A valuable component of anti-aging care, thanks to its active and preventive action, it boosts cells, helps tissues to restore themselves and thus fights against skin aging.

The correct use of ceramides

Good news, ceramides do not present any health risks or medical contraindications. Effective, healthy and tolerated by all skin types, they are not subject to health restrictions. So, to significantly improve the skin structure, prevent aggression and fight against dehydration, we apply it as a serum, cream or lotion.

The ideal? Adopt ceramides in your daily beauty routine from the age of 25-30 as a preventative measure, then later as a complement to an anti-aging treatment.

You will find this ingredient in our Anti-aging moisturizing serum and in the Regenerating cream from the KÄHMA range.
